While there are over 700,000 games available for download in the App Store, let’s be honest – not all of them are worth downloading. Today I’ve put together a list of the best games on iPhone in 2018.
Usually, you won’t know which games are worth the money until you’ve tried them out. I personally read reviews before I play any game, but even reviews are not reliable at times.
It’s only after I finish playing it that I can make a clear decision whether or not it’s one of the best games on iPhone. Here’s a short list of some of my favorites that you should play this year.
1. HQ (Free)
Also called HQ Trivia, this game was released on August 26, 2017. Initially, it was only compatible with iOS. However, it was later marketed to Android phones as well.
What do I like about this game? It allows you to participate in trivia-game contests for free on a daily basis.
The questions are multiple choice, and they get increasingly difficult as you advance towards the end. Each player has only 10 seconds to make a selection.
The prizes may be given to one contestant or split equally among the players when the questions are answered correctly together.
It’s like playing Who Wants To Be A Millionaire – but more competitive. And, you know, without the millions of dollars. It’s definitely worth the download.
2. INSIDE (Free)
This is a strong contender for one of the best games on iPhone that doesn’t cost a dime. INSIDE is made by the creators of LIMBO, a big hit on gaming consoles in 2016.
Thankfully, Playdead brought INSIDE to iPhones so that more people can enjoy it.
What do I like about this game? It conveys its story in an inquisitive manner and drags you into its gradual dystopian setups with complicated puzzles.
Some of these scenarios are easy enough for anyone to handle. However, others are much more challenging, and you’ll find yourself in need of help, grasping for clues.
These puzzles are paired with a dark storyline, keeping players interested for longer periods of time. This is not your usual puzzle game.
3. Far from Noise ($2.99)
“Far From Noise” is a strange game. In fact, many find it difficult to classify this as a game in the first place. Somehow, I agree. It’s more than just a game.
What do I like about it? At the beginning of this game, you will find yourself inside your car, wavering over the edge of a cliff. No one is around to help. It’s only you, the car, and a deer!
Death appears to be awaiting you. In this grave circumstance, you see that the environment is remarkably calm. The sun is rising and the waves are crashing against the coastline.
The conversation you make with yourself is comical and sympathetic all at once. But ultimately, it’s a game of choices. You choose your own ending.
It requires a lot of critical thinking and great decision-making skills.
The replayability is high in “Far From Noise.” It’s one of the best games for iPhone 8, no doubt about it.
4. Life is Strange ($2.99)
“Life is Strange” is undeniably one of the best games on iPhone. It has simple controls, as you only have to touch the screen to move around.
What do I like about this game? First of all, it has an intricate story, full of twists. The writers really know how to tug at your heartstrings.
The game appears almost real due to the clever use of beautiful sketches and cartoonish structure. The art helps you in immersing fully into the deep, rich, and powerful play.
The main character in this story is Max, a young girl who travels back to her birthplace in the Pacific Northwest to learn filmmaking. Suddenly, she realizes that she has the power to rewind time.
It’s important to know that as a player, you exist for seven days in the life of Max as she travels from home to school on a daily basis.
In this game, each decision comes with a consequence. And as you face each of these consequences, you will witness the conspiracy solidify and the action loosen.
5. The End of the World ($0.99)
Sean Wenham has created the perfect breakup game with The End of the World. Whether or not you’ve had your heart broken before, it is sure to fill you with feelings.
What do I like about this game? The End of the World is an exploration game, and the controls and gameplay is so simple that anyone can play it. You walk by holding the right or left side of the screen.
In each location you visit, there’s a clock icon. When you click it, you can revisit old times – the happy times you had with your lover.
What’s most notable about the game is its design. Each scene looks like a painting, incredibly gray and lonely.
Whether you end up feeling hopeful and strong, or more depressed and sad is entirely up to you. One thing is for sure, though – you will not be the same after you’re done playing the game.
6. Florence ($2.99)
Quite the opposite of The End of the World, Florence explores the story of a young woman who has fallen in love for the first time.
What do I like about this game? I was never a fan of sappy stories, so I was a bit hesitant to try this game. However, within minutes I was hooked.
The game will take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions, which is typical when you’re in love. Florence is a rare find. It’s simple yet ambitious at the same time.
And at the end of it, it will leave you with a story you won’t forget.
7. NBA 2K18 ($8)
2018 welcomes another NBA 2k game. This new update has expanded gameplay controls. You can now have more rebounding capabilities and improve your sprint on defense.
What do I like about this game? Quite different from the previous games listed here, NBA 2K18 is a hardcore sports simulation. The first that you’ll notice about it is its design.
It almost looks and feels like the real basketball game. There are many ways you can play the game. In each game mode, you have different choices of balls as well.
8. PUBG Mobile (Free)
There’s a reason why PUBG Mobile is so popular. This remains one of the best games iPhone 8 can offer.
What do I like about this game? While it’s true that there are several survival shooter games like PUBG, this game has managed to get all the necessary elements to make it more attractive to a wide range of players.
The map is smaller and there are no complicated rules. Even when you’re failing, it’s fun! It’s the best game on iOS that you can play with a group of friends.
9. Lara Croft Go ($4.99)
This is a turn-based puzzle game, and it’s about as perfect as a mobile game can get.
What do I like about it? Lara Croft looks like a spin-off of Tomb Raider. However, this puzzle game is more complex as you don’t only have to take out your enemies from behind and the side.
You also have to solve obstacle mazes and find your way across crumbling ruins. The design of the different levels is smart and clean.
It gives a fresh take on the classic runaway game without losing its original spirit. This is one of the best games on iPhone to play while on a subway or a plane ride.
10. Framed ($3.99)
You don’t often see mobile game developers pushing the boundaries of creativity and player experience. However, with Framed, you’re in for a great surprise.
This game was released in 2014, but it was not until recently that it has finally gained the acclaim that it deserves.
What do I like about this game? Simply put, Framed is charming and creative.
Your task as a player is to rearrange comic book panels so that you can evade the police. Taking the style of a noir thriller, the story is full of surprising twists and turns.
Because everything takes place without any dialogue, you are to make out the events as they occur. The best thing about the game is that each level does not require very much time to finish, so you can play it in between breaks.
The Bottom Line
There are countless iPhone games that you can try. However, if you’re looking for a fun and rich gaming experience, you might want to start by playing some of the games mentioned above.
It will not hurt if you explore out of the box though. Sometimes, there are great games that have stayed under the spotlight, waiting for you to discover them.
