
While Apple products are wonderfully made, there are times when our iPhones encounter issues. Sometimes we simply want to update and upgrade our operating system, and other times our device just stops working out of the blue.
Either way, setting up DFU mode on your iPhone might be your best and last solution!
Restarting our iPhones can solve simple problems, but sometimes we’ll need to take things further by putting our devices into ‘Recovery Mode’.

What Is DFU Mode on iPhone? What Is It for?
Device Firmware Upgrade or DFU is restoring your device to its original state when it encounters major problems. Problems that may cause you to turn to DFU mode include, but are not limited to the following:
- Downgrade The Version of iOS
Sometimes upgrading the running iOS screws up our devices. It can cause applications, and even the device itself to continuously crash. Setting up DFU mode usually solves the issue.
- To Jailbreak/Un-Jailbreak The Device
- Removal of an Expired Beta Version of The Operating System
How To Enter DFU Mode on iPhone
After assessing your device and deciding that DFU mode is necessary, let’s get into how you can do it!
DFU Mode on iPhone X, 8, and 7

1. Plug Your Device To Your Mac or Windows PC
2. Run iTunes
Make sure that iTunes is running for the duration of the setup process.

3. Turn Off Device

For iPhone 7 and 8, long press the side button until the power off slider shows. Then slide to the right to turn off the device.
For iPhone X, long press together the side button and either of the volume buttons. Slide the slider to the right to turn off the device.
4. Long-Press The Side Button For 3 Seconds
5. Press Either of The Volume Buttons While Holding The Side Button
6. Keep Pressing Both Buttons For 10 Seconds
After seeing the Apple logo, it means you have held the buttons long enough and will need to start step 6 again.
7. Release Side Button While Still Holding The Volume Button For 5 Seconds
Again, if you have held the buttons long enough “Plug into iTunes” will appear on the screen. If this happens, you will need to restart this process again.
8. Screen Remains Black
When everything is done properly, the screen will stay black. It may look like the device is turned off but it just means you have entered into DFU mode. iTunes will then be connected to your device.
DFU Mode on iPhone 6s and Earlier iPhones

1. Plug Your Device To Your Mac or Windows PC
2. iTunes Should Be Running

3. Turn Off Device

Press side button for a few seconds until the power off slider appears. Slide to the right to turn off the device.
4. Long-Press The Side Button For 3 Seconds
5. Press The Home Button
6. Keep Pressing Both Buttons For 10 Seconds
After seeing the Apple logo, it means you have held the buttons long enough and will need to start step 6 again.
7. Release Side Button While Still Holding The Home Button For 5 Seconds
Again, if you have held the buttons long enough “Plug into iTunes” will appear on the screen. So, you will need to restart this process again.
8. Screen Remains Black
When everything is done properly, the screen will stay black. It may look like the device is turned off but it just means you have entered into DFU mode. iTunes will then be connected to your device.
How To Exit DFU Mode on iPhone?
Entering into DFU mode on iPhone has a lot of steps, but exiting from the mode is quite easy!
Turn Off Device

For iPhone 7 and 8, long press the side button until the power off slider shows. Then slide to the right to turn off device.
For iPhone X, long press together the side button and either of the volume buttons. If you have pressed it hard enough, the power slides will show. Slide the slider to the right to turn off the device.
A Few Things To Remember
To know if you have successfully entered into DFU mode the screen should stay black. If there are icons that appear on the screen you have to do the steps again.
We may panic everytime our iPhones encounter some trouble, but solutions like this are just what we need to be able to use our phones again!
