How To: Enter & Exit DFU Mode on iPhone

While Apple products are wonderfully made, there are times when our iPhones encounter issues. Sometimes we simply want to update and upgrade our operating system, and other times our device just stops working out of the blue.

Either way, setting up DFU mode on your iPhone might be your best and last solution!

Restarting our iPhones can solve simple problems, but sometimes we’ll need to take things further by putting our devices into ‘Recovery Mode’.

If you’re wondering what exactly DFU mode is, and how to turn it on and off, I’ve got you covered in this article!

What Is DFU Mode on iPhone? What Is It for?

Device Firmware Upgrade or DFU is restoring your device to its original state when it encounters major problems. Problems that may cause you to turn to DFU mode include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Downgrade The Version of iOS

Sometimes upgrading the running iOS screws up our devices. It can cause applications, and even the device itself to continuously crash. Setting up DFU mode usually solves the issue.

  • To Jailbreak/Un-Jailbreak The Device
  • Removal of an Expired Beta Version of The Operating System

How To Enter DFU Mode on iPhone

After assessing your device and deciding that DFU mode is necessary, let’s get into how you can do it!

4. Long-Press The Side Button For 3 Seconds

5. Press Either of The Volume Buttons While Holding The Side Button

6. Keep Pressing Both Buttons For 10 Seconds

After seeing the Apple logo, it means you have held the buttons long enough and will need to start step 6 again.

7. Release Side Button While Still Holding The Volume Button For 5 Seconds

Again, if you have held the buttons long enough “Plug into iTunes” will appear on the screen. If this happens, you will need to restart this process again.

8. Screen Remains Black

When everything is done properly, the screen will stay black. It may look like the device is turned off but it just means you have entered into DFU mode. iTunes will then be connected to your device.
